participating online we ask that you please raise your hand so we can easily
I'm going to turn it over to
the board to identify you.
I'm going to turn it over to
the board to identify you.
Tonisha Scott, Orem, Omani, and
Michael Edwards, in any order,
please.
Good morning, council.
I'm Tonisha Scott, member of one
fair wage.
Over a century ago, labor
leaders, Lucy Parsons fought for
an eight-hour work day because
working people deserve dignity,
they deserve fairness and a life
this is the issue of the
state law.
And the state law has gathered
more than enough signatures to
qualify a ballot measure raising
the minimum wage to thirty
dollars an hour.
State law requires that is a
requirement and the law that the
city council place a properly
certified measure on its agenda
for consideration.
We call on this council that is
you guys to under the law
respect the people's voices and
let the voters decide.
and I think it's great to see
that you know so have some
dignity and a little compassion
folks and fight for the people
like they fought to put you in
those seats that you're
currently sitting at the moment
thank you.
Thank you for your comments next
speaker.
Good morning my name is michael
Edwards I am a leader with one
fair wage the legacy of slavery
is still felt in our economy
today tip workers
idea that their labor is worthless and that they should depend on customer's generosity
to survive.
That is why this $30 minimum wage measure matters.
It is about correcting historic in, oh my God, sorry, in qualities, lifting working
and ensuring that everyone who works can afford to live with dignity.
Again, black community members gather the majority of signatures for this measure,
to imestrate in leadership in a fight that benefits workers of education.
Thank you so much for your comments.
Next speaker.
Good morning, Chair Jenkins and council members of this committee.
My name is Orai Iomone with One Fair Wage.
It's a pleasure to be here with you all.
Let's go ahead.
Last Friday we were told verbally by the city clerk's office that we received the sufficiency
of signatures to qualify a measure here in the city of Oakland.
As mentioned by my colleagues, state law requires that that be heard at the following next council
meeting.
That is probably not going to be happening given that it's not in the rules committee
agenda or in the full council agenda on the 20th.
And so we're asking for folks to follow the rules,
follow the law, Alameda County did the same thing.
You are all welcome to do what Alameda County did,
which is to call for a study,
to further study the measure
before you guys make a decision on what to do next.
But we want you all to please follow the rules.
Thank you.
Thank you for your comments.
And if I may have the privilege
to just make a quick announcement
that someone on the dais birthday is today.
Happy birthday to City Administration Office Winnie Wu.
Happy birthday, apologize.
I didn't sign up so I probably need to make sure
that I do it properly, but I just wanted to shout
Miss Winnie Wu out.
Thank you, and that concludes your speakers for open forum.
All right, this, happy birthday.
This meeting's adjourned.
