and members of the exec board and the rep council
are also meeting this week.
We're creating a panel to put questionnaires together
for upcoming perspective board members
interviews who are seeking endorsements.

and interviews will be scheduled in the next couple weeks.

There's only a handful of things.
First, the most important one.
We, CSCA and the district, we were
able to reach a satisfactory and expedited settlement
on the number of items that we are going to begin negotiating.
We'd like to thank the district's team and their legal
team for getting this done, like in such expedited manner.
With that said, we will begin negotiations every third Friday of the month here with
the facilitator from the what's called the California Mitigation and Service Council.
Whatever that is.
Anyway, so we will begin that starting in September.
then the only other thing that I have to report is our labor rep Amy Buscalia and
myself and John have been having like you know check-ins now we've had two of
them we're gonna keep those like you know on a regular basis Amy and I will
be doing a blitz this coming Thursday just basically like you know hitting
sites and trying to reach potential members, explain you know what the local
chapter in the union is all about. And that's about it for now.
Item 10 report from Superintendent. Thank you. I'd like to thank Mikael and Carlos.
First of all it's great working with you and we are meeting regularly and I
think that's important and we're up to a good start. My team here, amazing team
that I've been able to work with so thank each of you for that and I've been busy attending
back to school nights incredible staff energy and seeing the kids we've started our coffee talks
we've done two at part need and ties good participation the great hearing from parents
we also will have one here with cookies in the evening for those that cannot come in the morning
That'll be upcoming.
We also are meeting with our staffs to just share who I am,
who we are, our plan, and that's been a lot of fun.
Our construction, again, you'll see in my newsletter
I send out tomorrow, the positive input
on those sites and the $30 million has been incredible.
And I'm just so pleased to see our students and staff just
thriving.
And being on our campus, I've been on each campus
these four times and watching students and our staff we an exemplary staff our
leadership of those places our coaches our teams we we are really in a good
spot to have a successful year so thank you for joining me at some of those
events and look forward to seeing you there there's so much be proud of our
campus and I know that our sites love having all of us there and visiting and
just a lot of great work so it's been fun and that's my report
Item 11, governing board assignments and committee, subcommittee for Duke.
I'd like to just share that we have a subcommittee meeting, Jan, myself, Zetta, and Heidi, and
it was a very productive meeting where we have a draft in front of you to adjust the
hats to discuss, you know, maybe changes, I believe at the last meeting it was mentioned
by Trustee Moss that they might not have been reviewed in your entire time here
here how many years have you been 12 so I think it was a great subcommittee to
present this information item and I'll turn to you to discuss it yeah it was it
was great to take a fresh set of eyes and I think we approached it at least I
I approached it in the way of our role as a governance board
really is supposed to align with the policy
and the big picture, right, the North Stars.
So aligning it with a strategic plan
seemed like a nice, a natural fit.
And that means that maybe the paths will change
in the future as well, as the strategic plan changes.
but I think in terms of the big buckets
of family and community connection,
advocacy and policy, academic excellence fit nicely.
And then having a discussion around the nuts and bolts,
the more operational side of the house
is also really important.
So having that also be a hack.
So yeah, so just kind of trying to balance
of aligning with the strategic plan, but also providing opportunities to plug into the operational side of the house.
Yeah, I think we tried to also look at kind of the number of external commitments it required.
So we tried to bring some equity across these hats, noting that the just, noting a couple of things.
One is that the district operations hat is actually effectively two, needs to be held by two people just because of the volume of what it oversees.
And then tried to bring a little specificity in terms of the site liaison to, you know,
at least indicate that, you know, there can be a different level of engagement in terms
of visiting a parent group meeting in the fall and participating with the CBO
and the spring around the budget road show.
And that those would be ideal kind of minimal touch points for each site liaison.
And I think the only other thing that I'd add
to what Zara said is we really wanted to think
about the places in which we could add value
to the district in terms of the strategic plan,
whether that's through deepening relationships,
supporting new initiatives and that things like,
I'll just take for example, academic excellence
over curriculum because so much of our curriculum
right now is newly adopted, it's engaged, it's ongoing,
but if and when another initiative comes up,
if the state were to change a standard,
that would be something that would potentially
come into academic excellence
and that could be aligned over time,
that these aren't intended necessarily to be static.
Do you guys have any questions or comments?
I think what we'd love to have now is just a conversation
about what resonates, if anything doesn't.
Do things feel like they're missing?
Does something feel too overwhelming?
And then since it's information,
We would take it back and do another edit
and bring it back for approval of future meeting.
Yeah, I really liked how you guys separated out
the different, the most part you've noted
what times the meetings are,
but I do see academic excellence
in especially district operations.
There's a lack of clarity as to when the meetings are.
you know, a goal to commit. So yeah, no I think that's fair. I mean I think to the
extent that those of us with more flexible schedules can take on some of
those hats at least if this is a way that we want to continue to move
forward at least the kind of in the in the auspices of what I like to think of
as is it safe enough to try. Like I had tend to have more flexibility in my
schedule and in the ability to be able to move into so it would be easier for
me to take on a district operations hat as a test case to see what that
commitment realistically looks like. I think they can, you're right, they can
shift and I think oftentimes it is unclear for some of these other types of
media or even committees like the Safety Committee that I don't think that at all
last year because it's been really taken over by our facilities developments but
really understanding that that is an important place where the board has an
opportunity to connect differently with like a local law enforcement, WCPD and
the county sheriff and that those and ensuring those relationships is
important. I think those tend to be kind of middle to end of day so definitely
during the working day but after school and then you know the and then some of
these things like the governor's budget workshop is like a one-day kind of one
done and you tend to have a pretty good heads up about that in terms of being
able to manage schedules and scheduling, but I think it's a good point one way.
I think none of this is ever going to be perfect.
And to add into that, thank you if I may, we put the, you know, Jan and I and I didn't have,
special education might be, this would be the max special education might do two
meetings. The literacy committee is still being informed by Jan and her team, so we
wanted to put the high-end, they're very well, maybe less than that, and then we
would adjust those based on time of day by who would be there. So it probably
won't be that many names for that academic excellence category, but we
wanted to be safe to start with it.
For the district operations, we have to figure out how we divided up with it being two hats.
And one other thing is the UCF meetings traditionally
has been attended by the board president.
It makes sense the way he categorized it,
but just with that understanding that he would,
I think that that was the finance.
WUCF hasn't actually attended by the board president.
But then the finance happened.
Yeah, but it might have doubled up.
The president's meetings.
Or you might have overlapped.
Yeah. Yeah.
You might have held both at the same time.
Okay.
are you comfortable with us bringing this board as an action
item at our next meeting?
So does WCTA liaison and CSCA liaison,
is that the president's name?
No, so that is actually, thanks for calling that out, Amy,
otherwise I would have forgotten.
That is actually, I think, a little bit, it's two things.
One is when a board member will have time,
because if you look at the CSCA liaison,
Those are all the potential negotiation dates.
I don't think that that's realistic for everyone
to participate in, but also noting
in terms of deepening relationships
and wanting to have a conversation with WCTA and CSEA
to say, is there an opportunity for a board member
to participate once or twice a year
to come to a meeting that would just
be like there would be some portion dedicated
to a Q&A or a meet and greet or something,
because that's a relationship that we also
felt that we wanted to strengthen.
And finding an avenue of how to do
that outside of the negotiations table
and the specific group that sits at that table,
being able to be exposed to more of the members.
More of a regular meeting for them.
Well, we would join in with something
that was already existing.
Yeah, obviously with our approval and permission,
just in terms of being able, in the same way
that we have school site liaisons,
that doesn't make sense to have like a labor liaison.
And then the parent group could just be like,
it's in the FTE meeting as a site liaison.
And you would do that with the superintendent?
Okay.
In conjunction with the other.

And that's what, so that's also why these,
it's kind of the cabinet level position
that you are supporting.
I think that's particularly true of the district operations.
So, you know, going to the Citizens Bond Oversight Committee
the cabinet member you're going with is the CBO
and not necessarily the superintendent.

No, so you would envision that when you frame.
We would adopt and assign.

recall I worked with AMS, which is the American modular system company, to provide our new
library and auxiliary offices over at Wallace Heights. Upon approval of the delivery
and haul route, which is dictated by Caltrans and local city authority people, the
contractor was required to provide bucket trucks with wire lifters to raise
the hanging wires as well as some tree trimming to along the pathway from
from freeway to the Walnut Heights campus. In order to do that they needed to
add to the scope work total of $7,511.86. So I'm looking for board approval of the
Walnut Heights Elementary School Module Building Project in change order and
the approval of seven thousand five hundred eleven and eighty cents and a
second to approve change order number two for the Wilmette Heights Elementary
School modular building project in the amount of $7,511.80. All those in favor?

project. The district had contracted with AMS back on February 3rd, 2025 and the contractor

this is just for the AMS portion of the contract. Just the AMS, yeah. And what it does, it starts a

I happened to pop into PE at WCI right when he was telling
all the parents about how they were nurturing
just a love of physical activity,
laying the groundwork for the future,
and that someday their kids would not be taking PE,
and they wouldn't have structured physical activity.
So now is the time to get them to really enjoy it
so that as adults, they would want
to continue on that path.
And I don't know, your message just really resonated with me.
I thought that was really great that you said that to the fans.
And I heard lots of teachers saying great messages.
It's always nice to hear what people are thinking about.
One of the things that I heard, again,
mostly at the WCI campus, but at Indian Valley also,
was about the importance of providing opportunities
for students to collaborate with each other
and cooperate with each other, and away from devices.
And so I think that that is a huge thing that's
on everybody's mind right now.
Every parent is worried, I think,
about the amount of screen time that their children have
and how they're going to function
as adults with human contact.
So to hear teachers addressing that
and saying that we are going to provide opportunities
in our classrooms for those, to build those skills.
That was just, it was really nice to hear.

of desire to learn and a lot of really great volunteers.

just to see, I mean I did get to go to the ribbon cutting
